About Me

securing an auto repair shop and parking lot

I own my own auto repair shop and have done rather well with it over the years. About a year ago, some of the cars parked outside of my garage were broken into and some things were stolen out of them. Since they were parked on my property, my insurance had to cover the cost of replacement which made my rates go up. I had to install a security system to appease the insurance company and provide my customers with the peace of mind that their vehicles would be safe with me. Got An Old Home Alarm System? Reasons To Consider Upgrading It To A Wi-Fi Version

by Karen Welch

If you have a home alarm system that works, you may not be giving it much thought. However, technological advancements over the past decade have drastically changed the home alarm monitoring game. New systems offer better resolution cameras and more features for home owners. If you are haven't thought about upgrading your old home alarm system, or are on the fence about doing so, here are some of the reasons to consider a newer wi-fi home alarm system.

You Can Set Your Alarm Anywhere

Have you ever walked out of your home, made it all the way to work, and then realized that you forgot to set your home security alarm? Unfortunately, when people are busy or in a hurry to get to where they are going, this can happen. If you have an older alarm, that leaves you in quite the conundrum. You either leave your home unprotected for the day or leave what you are doing to go back home and set the alarm. However, with a newer wi-fi home alarm system, this problem becomes a thing of the past. You can easily arm or disarm your home alarm system from a computer, tablet or smartphone.

You Can See Who is at Your Door

Another benefit to a home alarm system is that you can set the system up to be alerted to anyone ringing your doorbell or when motion detection cameras near your door record activity. And with new high resolution security cameras, you will have a clear view of the person's face. You can even install a speaker system that allows you to talk to this individual, or automated door locks, so you can let someone in without even being there. This is ideal if you have children who walk home from school. You can let them in and out of the house, without worrying about them losing the key to your home. This is also perfect because it allows you to let contractors or family members into your home, without having to actually be there.

You Can Monitor Your Alarm and Alerts Anywhere

One of the biggest benefits to upgrading your old home alarm system in favor of a newer wi-fi version is that you can monitor your home, alarm and alerts from anywhere, as long as you can connect to the Internet. With an old home alarm system, you receive a phone call when the alarm is going off and you then can tell the dispatcher that it is a false alarm or to send police over to your home, for which you may be charged. With a newer system, you receive an alert, either through email, text or phone call. You can then hop onto your live feed and see what is going on in your home with the security cameras. If you see your kid set off the motion detector, you can tell the dispatcher that before they send help. Or, if you see an intruder is in your home, you can alert the dispatcher to that fact so they can get a police officer in there as quickly as possible. You have the ability to check on the cameras in your home at any time and from anywhere, whether you are at work, on vacation or at the gym. This can give you great peace of mind.

You Can Set-Up and Use Home Automation Features

The last benefit to newer wi-fi home alarm systems is that you can set up and use home automation features if you so desire. You can connect your lights to your home security system, allowing you to turn your lights on and off through your wi-fi alarm. You can connect your thermostat, allowing you to adjust the temperature, so your home is the perfect temperature when you get home. Or you can connect your electronic devices, allowing you to change the channel on the television or shut it off completely if you don't like what your children are watching when you're not home. Home automation features don't protect your home, but they make your life easier, which is a nice bonus.

Technology has evolved and newer wi-fi home alarm systems have the capability to do much more than older systems. If your system is old and doesn't have these features, you may want to consider switching to a newer unit to better protect your home and make your life simpler.
