About Me

securing an auto repair shop and parking lot

I own my own auto repair shop and have done rather well with it over the years. About a year ago, some of the cars parked outside of my garage were broken into and some things were stolen out of them. Since they were parked on my property, my insurance had to cover the cost of replacement which made my rates go up. I had to install a security system to appease the insurance company and provide my customers with the peace of mind that their vehicles would be safe with me. Fire Suppression Systems in the Home

by Karen Welch

You will see that a lot of people will invest a great deal of money in their home for a security system. Security systems are a great investment because they are burglar deterrents. However, there is an aspect of home security that is often overlooked, and that is fire safety. There are approximately 350,000 house fires each year, and house fires do cause civilian death and injury. Not only do fires result in death and injury, but house fires cause a lot of property damage as well. There are specific things that you can do that will help you be prepared for a house fire.

Sprinkler System

One of the very best ways to be prepared for a fire is to equip your home with a fire suppression system. One of the most effective ways to suppress fire is with a fire sprinkler system. You will see these systems all through commercial buildings because building managers understand how quickly a fire can spread. The sprinkler system pipes will always have water running through them. The sprinkler head will usually be encased in glass that has glycerin inside. The glycerin has a very low boiling point, and in the event of a fire the glycerine will boil and break the glass. When the glass breaks the water will be allowed to flow through the sprinkler heads.

Fire Alarm Systems

A fire alarm system is very similar to a security system; in fact, many systems can be integrated to work with one another. Some of the best equipment that you can by for fire safety can be used in conjunction with an alarm system. Some equipment that you should think about including in your system are smoke/ heat detectors and a smart thermostat. The smoke and heat detector does not only detect heat but it will also detect a rapid change in temperature. The smart thermostat will also recognize a rapid change in temperature and cut the power to the furnace.

Fire Extinguishers

If you do not want to invest in an alarm system or have your home set up with a fire sprinkler system, another option is to keep fire extinguishers on hand. Fire extinguishers should be on every floor of the home, and then also be included in the kitchen and the laundry room. These will allow you to put out a fire in the home before it grows into something devastating.
