Security is paramount in the business world. Effective security can prevent theft and make your store or office a safer place. Many business owners don't give enough consideration to security. Luckily, it's never too late to make the necessary changes. Here are four tips that will help you improve your business security with the aid of a commercial locksmith:
1. Rekey your locks periodically.
Many businesses stand the test of time, lasting for years or even decades. During the lifespan of your business, you'll likely see employees come and go. Ideally, each former employee would leave on good terms, but that's not always possible. Sometimes it's necessary to fire an employee. An employee with bad intentions may make a copy of their keys to your business, using it to cause trouble later. Prevent unauthorized individuals from gaining access to your business by having your locks periodically rekeyed.
2. Install security doors.
Security doors can keep your business safe when it's time to lock up for the night. Many stores have large glass doors, which allow customers to easily see inside. While glass doors can be an asset during the day, at night, they become a security threat. Glass can be easily shattered, allowing burglars access to your building. Even tempered glass is not immune. Security doors are made from metal bars that will prevent damage to your shop. They can be closed and locked when necessary, adding an extra layer of security to your store or office.
3. Add deadbolts to your doors.
Deadbolts provide more security than a simple locking doorknob. A deadbolt will make your door resistant to impact. With a deadbolt installed, a door won't open if it's kicked in an attempt to force it open. Deadbolts also cannot be easily dislodged like some locks with a hooking mechanism.
You can choose to have single or double cylinder deadbolts installed in your doors. Both have their pros and cons. Double cylinder deadbolts can only be opened with a key on either side of the door, which means they can provide more security. On the other hand, single cylinder deadbolts may be safer in the event of a fire or other emergency.
4. Discuss security strategies with your locksmith.
Remember that commercial locksmiths have a lot of experience helping business owners like you. When in doubt, ask your locksmith for their professional opinion. They may have additional suggestions to make your store or office more secure.
